Caritas Australia works in partnership with the Tutu Training College on the island of Taveuni in Fiji to help young men, women and couples establish themselves as farmers on their own land. The farming program takes a holistic approach to community development, as it aims to train people to achieve self-employment, rather than to look for employment in other companies. To secure a sustainable livelihood in rural areas farmers need unfettered access to their own land and to the fruits of their labour - however this is often not the case in Fijis communal village environment.
