“Pixel Power: Painting the Big Picture” is a high school mural project that incorporates digital photography and the efforts of hundreds of art students whose task it was to create a 72-foot by 10-foot mural that would reflect their school culture. Using technology as an art tool, eighty photography students were given the assignment to record images that would represent student life. They used digital cameras, and then used computer software to simplify the human forms to be painted by student artists. Digital photography and photo editing software enabled the students to articulate the human form, and allowed them to work more quickly and accurately while retaining the realism a project of this magnitude demanded. Like the painters of the Renaissance who used the camera obscura to aid them with drawing and perspective to create more realistic form our students learned how to create a powerful realistic mural.
